Seven Misconceptions about Davao City

Davao City
Davao is not your ordinary cosmopolitan city.

"Don't judge my brother, he is not a book." There goes the famous line of Melanie Marquez. It had gained fame because (1) it's funny, and (2) it's ridiculously funny. However, that particular quote makes sense at some point. Let me rephrase her quote by modifying some words: "Don't judge a place if you haven't been there." For the past years, I have met people from different provinces in the Philippines - Metro Manila, Baguio, Legazpi, Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, and etc. And whenever I inform them that I am from Davao, they'd often tell me all those out-of-this-world claims based from premature judgments. Here are the seven misconceptions about Davao City.

1) It's a mall world, after all!

I had a friend who's from the Kingdom of Pili Nuts. In the middle of our highly intellectual conversation, he suddenly asked, "Do you have malls in Davao?" I got caught off guard by his question. I replied, "Yes, we do have malls in Davao, in fact we have two SM Malls in which one is a premier mall. We also have an Ayala Mall. It's like Greenbelt, but on a smaller scale. And we also have lots of homegrown malls strategically located at the downtown area.

And then poof, he became Koko crunch!

2) Electric Dream

This story was shared by my mom. Back in 1988, she went to Manila to attend her board exam review. Her roommate, who's a resident of Manila asked her, "May kuryente ba sa Davao?" (Do you have electricity in Davao?). My mom lost her consciousness for three nanoseconds.

3) T[err]ourism

Davao City is the main gateway of Mindanao. It has an international airport accessible to other major points of the country, and as well in Asia. Business is thriving in the city and is clearly evident due to numerous infrastructures such as recreational areas, business centers, hotels, and a whole lot more. The city is also a melting pot of different tribes, cultures, and beliefs. Truly, Davao is a diverse city.

Davao City
Multicultural city.

Despite its unique feature, people outside Mindanao tend to judge Davao in general (and this also applies to different cities and towns in Mindanao). I am not denying the fact that there are religious and political conflicts in Mindanao. But, those conflicts are usually very far from the city and don't happen everyday. Consider this: It's really impossible to totally eradicate crime in a city. To say that Davao is unsafe because it's in Mindanao is an ignorant and an irresponsible statement. I pity those who have this kind of mentality.

4) Rules of the Air

Back in college, I went to Quezon City to attend a conference held at one of the most prestigious universities of the country. My seat mate, who was also from the host university asked, "So like, you're from Manila ba?" To which I replied, "No, I am from Davao."

Davao City

Davao City
Davao International Airport.

"So like, how did you get here? Like, did you ride a bus or barge or something?" I was not sure if she's mocking me or if she's really serious. "I had just arrived yesterday and the Boeing 747 flight took me an hour and thirty minutes to reach Manila. And yes, we have an international airport in Davao."

"Oh, talaga? I thought Davao is just a very big bukid!" She exclaimed. Guys, take note of the word bukid. BUKID. Wow, big word!

5) Let's have a coffee break!

I remember two years ago when I met up with a friend in Makati. Her friend was also with her. After some informal introduction, he got surprised when he knew that I am from Davao City. We decided to spend the rest of the afternoon at Starbucks 6750. My friend's friend was a bit loud and nosy but tolerable at some level.

My friend's friend thought that I am ignorant to such that I haven't set foot to a coffee shop. He overwhelmingly said, "You know, Starbucks is really good! You should try their Coffee Jelly (seriously, Coffee Jelly?!) and their pastries as well. And oh! The shop has free wi-fi connectivity which allows you to connect to the world wide web." He even added, "I'd love to have your photos taken with your orders later. Di ba wala kayong Starbucks sa Davao?"

I just smiled and replied, "I am aware of that, thank you. And we have Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Bo's and some homegrown coffee shops like Green Coffee, Basti's Brew and Blugré in our city, offering similar services. You haven't tried our very own Durian coffee, have you?"

He will never be my friend.

6) Religious Battle

On the second day of the conference, I was tasked to lead the morning prayer. After that, my group mate who hails from Mandaue approached me with a puzzled look. "You're from Davao, right? I thought you're a Muslim." I was really surprised by his claims. I told him that Davao City is predominantly Christian. At least, he did not give any racist remarks. Very good!

7) Rainbow Cab

Some of my friends who were planning to to visit Davao often ask me about the things that they shouldn't miss. However, the most common question was this: Do you have cab services in Davao?

Black and white. Photo by anythingaboutdavao.blogspot.com

Yes, we do have a cab service in Davao, in fact it comes with different colors - white, yellow, orange, blue, sky blue, pink, lavender, silver, and black. Taking a cab is the most efficient way to tour the city. And oh, Davaoeño cabbies are known for their honesty. There's nothing to worry about when you take a cab in Davao City. You can also pay the cab driver through your debit card. Isn't that convenient to the commuters?

- - - - -

Davao is truly a great place to live in. It was even named as one of the most livable cities not just in the Philippines, but also in the southeast asia region. Peace and order coexists with each other, and the Christian and Muslim communities interact well because the two groups respect each other's beliefs and traditions. The people of Davao is the main reason why the city is such an extraordinary place. Davaoeños are peace loving and friendly, but intolerant to erring ways. Lastly, we are law-abiding citizens. People outside Davao may find the city too stiff due to numerous city ordinances. But for Davaoeños, we learned to live with the laws because we firmly believed that discipline is the key to success. Everyone strives hard to make Davao a better place to live.

    1. I just want to say that i love this article as well as a little sad that there are some misconceptions to our lovable place of Davao City. Indeed they didn't know how peaceful and safe Davao really is. Sure, it's true that people in Davao are well disciplined and smart enough compared to other cities. Hail Davao City!! :) HAPPY KADAYAWAN EVERYONE!! :D

    2. I don't consider their ignorance of Davao City borne of misconception. I lived there quite a while and it's their forte to find fault and disparage people and places from outside Manila. They're actually awkwardly ignorant and don't find books or internet or any source of educated information interesting. Sorry but rather than answer these mockery, teach then how to use a computer of read books and magazines.

    3. I have stayed in many places in the Philippines, but a large number of people from NCR don't know Mindanao, particularly Davao City. Their questions like availability of electric power, telephones, TV channels, taxis, shopping malls, etc. always comes up. In one instance, I got so exasperated about their disparaging remarks that i blurted out, "At least kaming taga Davao, nakapunta ng Maynila, kayo di nakapunta ng Davao." My kumadre's son was elated when a taxi brought him to our house and the boy happily remarked, "Nay, sinuklian ako ng mama," referring to the taxi driver. He was so elated that the taxi driver gave him his change which probably did not happen in all of his taxi-riding days in Manila. I know of several public and private employees and officials who relocated/stayed for good after a short stint/assignment in Davao City. Davao City is cosmopolitan; almost all major Filipino tribal groups are represented - Cebuanos,Ilonggos, Cavitenos, Batanguenos, Pampangos, Ilokano, thus, several dialects are spoken here. My children who are working abroad, when they retire, will go back to Davao City.

    4. There are still ignorant people about Davao. But just bear with them when they ask silly quesions about Davao. I hope at this present time many people from outside of Davao are already educated about the city.

  6. I miss Davao. People do have a lot of misconceptions about the place. Actually about Mindanao as a whole. I remember when I studied in Manila in Grade 5, a classmate asked why I wasn't Muslim and that they feel that Davao is a province as if it's something negative. We were children back then, but I hope parents in the newer generation are more aware that there are a few differences and more similarities between each other - wherever we may come from.

Plus points talaga sa honest Davao taxis! :)

    3. RM Bulseco, you cannot say whole Mindanao. I have lived In Cotabato Province for a long time and I witnessed how different Cotabato from Davao. Davao is a very peaceful area but Cotabato is simply different with almost everyone having unlicensed gun and not safe loittering around at night. I liked Davao because Mayor Duterte made it a peaceful City. Speak for Davao but Mindanao.

The thing is, you're not alone. I live in Malabon, which is still a part of Metro Manila, but there are people who ask me if it's already a province - seriously? LOL. Some ignorant people need to learn to shut up.

But, thank you for this post. Davao is in my must-visit places, and I can't wait to visit soon!

  15. Some people are just plain ignorant. I had a similar incident in one of my vacay travels in metro manila.

One time while riding a jeepney, i asked a co-passenger for the directions of a particular place, then thanked him for his help. And then he asked,"bakit taga-saan ka ba?" To which i replied,"tagaDavao." He said,"ah ganun ba, layo ah. May jeep rin ba sa inyo? Hindi ba puro kalabaw lang ang nandun?(sabay ngiting nakakaloko)" I was just speechless. Wow. Sabi ko,"kuya if u must know, i drive an isuzu alterra in davao. At kung di naman, sumasakay ako ng taxi. Pero OO. May jeepney rin sa amin kung yun ang tinatanong mo." sabay lingon sa kabila.

It still infuriates me to this day whenever i remember that incident. That happened in 2011.

  16. I love Davao! I have to admit though that I heard some weird misconceptions about it prior to my first Davao flight. Thanks to my beloved Davaoeno friends, they convinced me to book a flight in late 2009 and even went there alone. I can say blame the media for just showing the downsides (for ratings? tsk). I do believe though na with numerous print and online features, marami na rin ang magiging open-minded pagdating sa pananaw nil a about Davao. Nice article, Renz! :)

  17. RM,
the same questions were asked of me 33 years ago when i went to study in manila. plus the fact that the city was considered to be of a war zone then, with tanks tanks parked on every street corner.
shows you how media can influence people, half of the time in the wrong way. what's funny is that i was more updated, in a lot of ways, than some of my manila based classmates. btw, are you related to Alex (my classmate in ateneo high)?

  22. I'm working abroad for 10 years now, and what I notice when I come back home is that the traffic is unbearable... that is because of the growing population of our great city... more people migrating to Davao City.

Just my thinking... maybe... just maybe, it's better to leave it that way. Let them think that Davao is primitive and old-age so they won't think of migrating to Davao and congest our city.

I like this article... but when I tell Filipino here in US that I'm from Davao, so far it's all complements that I hear... like... "Diba maganda sa Davao?", "Sana makapasyal ako sa Davao." , "Masarap daw ang pomelo duon". CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i agree with keeping the notion that davao is primitive and old fashioned as their conception of what it really is.. call me selfish but i really don't want them (especially manileños) to migrate here.. mayayabang talaga mga taga manila

      Delete
    2. I agree! I would much rather have them thinking that Davao is some exclusive getaway bukid, so that they'll not think of migrating to Davao. The fact that Davao is all at once City and Bukid at the same time is what makes it so enticing! Nakaka addict ang Davao and mind you, a lot of ppl in manila plan to retire in Davao. Sana lang it won't be too urban. As it is now, honestly, Davao is in danger of becoming like cramped Manila. I miss old Davao, when it was just victoria plaza and Js gaisano and everyone knew everybody else. As for the side comments, yes, we all experienced that in one way or another, pero most educated people from Manila usually are all praises for Davao, seriously! They're mostly eager to be friends with us and can't wait to visit. We are best known for our rare fruits, fresh seafood, cheapest buffets, peace and order, clean air, honest cab drivers, to name a few. The best comment I heard about Davao so far: "Bakit sa Davao, ang daming magaganda sa inyo?!!! Baka dahil sa tubig ninyo, kasi ang gaganda ng mga taga Davao!" Hahaha (Mo lang?) I must say, for all the funny comments they blurt out, nothing beats the compliments they also throw at us!

    3. stop telling people how beautiful Davao is. Let the mga taga Manila suffer in their concrete jungle. They might migrate here. The few that I met from Manila are ignorant and mayabang. They think that Manila is the Philippines. Keep them ignorant and afraid of Davao.

  25. this post is funny. ignorance should be a crime! but i guess, more than getting annoyed and berating some of our less knowledgeable countrymen, we should be more accommodating towards them and strive to teach them that there is more to Mindanao than the war-torn footage and bomb sites they show on TV.

in my opinion, the best thing about Davao is the people - Davaoeno's are proud and loyal. I think it comes from having lived comfortably and peacefully in the city when there are wars and murders of innocent lives and rapes all over the news . honestly, if you're not the outdoorsy, nature-lover type of person, Davao isn't really all that 'happening'. but the charm is really with the people and our love for Davao. We just have to understand that it's not the same with people from other towns and cities in the country. And besides, I'm guilty of having had some misconceptions about Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam and the like. So Davaoeno's, let's just spread the love :))

  27. I've also encountered people outside of Davao who misinterpret things around here.
Like when a band member from Manila visited, and I was with him in the cab. He said "akala ko bukid lang ang Davao, pero modern pala noh" and I didn't reply instead I thought I wanted to throw myself out of the cab lol

AND! once I had a phone call with a guy from Manila. I had trouble talking in tagalog at that time because I haven't practiced speaking it well. He just went laughing his butt off by saying something discriminating that the people who speak Bisaya or Cebuano can't speak Tagalog sensibly.

welp! Now that I have mastered speaking Tagalog, they compliment me by saying "You don't sound like a bisaya".
    what the hell... lol

It seems that even other Filipinos ridicule their neighbors which is a "fun" thing to do but not generalizing.

    thanks for the post man!

Those people you encountered were just trying to impress themselves, as if they are old rich. Trying to fit themselves in the high social class. People in Davao are simple and natural people. We do not try to be somebody. I don't even think we are world class. Masyado silang hambog.I hope they realize that.

There;s no issue there, after all, as written at the title of the article, "misconceptions." At the end of the tunnel, walang masama kung nakatira tayo sa bukid. Bakit naman tayo masasaktan diba? Opinyon lang! CHEERS!

  60. This post is hilarious because it rings so true! What's good about it though is that it has become an avenue for us to get together and remember what we so love about Davao. Sometimes the comments of Manila people can be insensitive or downright insulting, and it is understandable for us to get piqued. But the more important thing I guess is not to focus on correcting the misconceptions but on reminiscing and remembering the beautiful things we love about Davao and maybe, use our creativity to showcase these to our fellow countrymen. There are things to preserve and things to improve on. One thing we all have in common is our love for our hometown and this should inspire us to be pro-active and not vindictive nor spiteful. If there is one character we are known for, it is for the goodness of our bisaya hearts and we should take care to maintain that.

We may feel slighted when people consider us as "taga bukid", but look at them. By their prejudice alone, they're not really above us. They're actually down there, natives of a polluted city who we do not even know from what diploma mill they got their college degrees from.

  65. Oh I so love this Blog!! I am even teary eyed reading this!! I am a Dabawenya and I so loved and proud to be!! There is no place like Davao.

I am working in one of the country clubs in Manila and everytime the members would know I am from Davao. They would start to ask me a lot of questions about my beloved Davao. And here i am answering them in an honest way possible and of course bragging about how Davao City is different from what they just hear or saw in the news. But my last sentence for them. " Maam/Sir, you have to see it and experience it to believe it. After your trip, come and see me and tell me if i am lying!! So far they all come back to me but, not to tell me i am lying instead, they share thier wonderful experience in Davao with me. Taxi drivers in Davao are one of a kind.

Congrats for this article! Keep up the good work!! God bless you!!

Showed her pictures of orchids, durian and other fruits, beaches and etc. She's so fascinated but still asked the question " Do you have Post Office there?" Since she asked nicely I have to tell her more what Davao is. Other students got to ask if we still live in trees, if we have computers. We just have to be tolerant to answer them nicely if we feel that they are really curious about our place.

We asked him, "Do you think we live in trees and swing from vines?" To think this classmate was from a prestigious Manila high school. It's a little sad to hear that some people in our country still are so ignorant.

Tapos, I'd joke around him pag kumakain kami sa labas dito sa Manila. "Oh, may ganito ba sa Davao?" LOL. Pero not to the point naman na pipicture-an ko siya na may hawak na Starbucks or whatever coz that's plain stupid :/

Oooh, last! Whenever his mom visits him dito sa Manila, lagi kaming kumakain sa Max's Restaurant, kasi fave yun ng mommy niya at wala pang Max's sa Davao (ngayon meron na daw hihi).

Anyway, been to Davao twice, and I love it <3

  77. I enjoyed reading this! Hilariously informative! I've been to Davao once (in 2011) when I purposely visited Kidapawan and Digos City for an official business. And I have to say that your posts about Davao helped me to at least know the general facts about the city. I hailed a cab from the airport and confidently enjoyed the view to where I was heading without minding the cab meter 'cos I believe every driver there is honest. Thanks, Renz!

Just want to share my story: I was visiting my aunt in Lipa, Batangas. In my head I could not help but think of how small their town is (this was way back in 2002). She took me to Greenwich kasi I said I wanted pizza (deep inside I was missing Picobello, which btw is closed already. I'm so sad) So while I was attacking my pizza, because I was so so hungry, I caught her staring at me with this puppy-owner look. Then she said "Hay naku 'day. Walang ganito sa inyo no? Sige lang, kain ka lang ng kain ha? Magbaon ka kung gusto mo."

Isa, Queensland Australia every summer. So I find it common, it's not that fanciful if you ask me.."

If I were the one told about those questions, I would quickly reply as "From what planet (province, municipality or city) are you coming from? You're staying in the capital city of the PH and yet and obviously, you are poorly informed on what's happening to your country." Well see, if they could best explain on why and how they came up with those tactless if not pea-brained queries.

  109. I would like to see the people of Davao do something about protecting wildlife, such as the flying lizards which are dried and sold in public markets as medicine to treat asthma. Aren't there enough enlightened people to spread the word that animal species need protection and dried or smoked protein will not dilate the bronchioles? Such senseless poaching practices just confirm the misconception that Davao is a backward and unenlightened city. I hope the citizens of Davao will stop the massacre of these species. Until we hear from the mayor what his plans are for stopping illegal wildlife poaching, Davao will belong to my and my friends' boycott list. Thank you very much. Yours truly, Skye Lark.

  119. I love this blog and I'm proud to be Dabawenyo. Para bang sila nalang ang umaasenso sa in terms of lifestyle, economic, social and infrastructure developments. Siempre maiinis karin so I made a correction to my boss or to people who look down Davao as a very poor undevelope City / Province. Presently I am living outside Philippines, but my mind is at rest and confident leaving my home. dahil mababait mga kapitbahay ko and the Dabawenyos in general. may malasakit sa kapwa at di mapagmataas. Again, I am speaking in general terms ( ang mga nakararami ) Hindi ko naman sinasabi na walang mga untoward incidents na nangyayari sa Davao, but it is very isolated at mga dayo galing sa ibang probinsya or ibang bansa ang nagdadala ng gulo sa Davao.

  120. I think the main reason kaya ignorant ang mga Manilans about Davao is because It's underrepresented. Hindi kasi sya madalas makita sa TV na ina advertise and kapag nababalita namn, it's either may kaguluhan, or something bad . Yung iba naman, they just don't give a damn. Cheer Up Davao.
