Essential Carry-On Luggage Items for Student Travelers

Traveling is a big part of the student lifestyle. Every year, thousands of students travel halfway around the world in search of adventures in the sun, new experiences, and a chance to earn some money during a gap year. There are well-worn backpacker trails around Southeast Asia, Australia and South America, with backpacker hostels and cheap bars a plenty. Since most students working through a masters in computer science online don’t have much disposable income, it is essential that you pack the right things before your trip, as you won’t be able to afford to replace essential items once you arrive. Here is our guide to the most important items you need to pack in your carry-on luggage if you are heading off on a student travel adventure.

Laptop

Traveling as a student often means working on assignments while you see amazing new sites. This is especially true if you are taking an online masters in computer science. Always pack a laptop, or at the very least, a tablet, as this will make it easier to send in coursework or connect to your college tutors while on the road. Smartphones are useful, but the screen is too small to be useable if you need to work for a couple of hours.

E-Reader

Before e-readers were invented, it was normal to carry a bag of books when you traveled overseas. The lure of paper is still strong for many people, but e-readers are a practical alternative to heavy, space consuming books. You can download thousands of books on to a Kindle and it takes up virtually no room in a carry-on case. You can also download books as you go, so you won’t ever run out of reading material.

Noise Cancelling Headphones

Flights are noisy and unless you are well practiced at blocking out annoying sounds, a pair of noise cancelling headphones will be very useful. Look online for the best noise cancelling headphones and always read the reviews before you buy. You can pick up this type of thing at the airport, but most things are more expensive, and even if Duty-Free is supposed to be tax-free and therefore cheaper, it rarely is.

Emergency Battery Charger

Never leave home without an emergency battery charger for your smartphone or tablet. This could save your bacon if you end up stuck in the middle of nowhere without a power outlet.

Notebook and Pen

Notebooks and pens are out of fashion, but they are a great way of jotting down notes as you go through your trip. It’s easy to pull out a small notebook to record your musings, experiences, or draw sketches of the places you visit. Combined with a camera phone and a selfie stick, you end up with a complete picture of your trip overseas.

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit should contain everything you need in the event that your hold luggage goes AWOL, including a clean set of underwear, toothbrush and deodorant.

Never leave home without the items above, or your trip won’t be quite so entertaining.
